We're taught to say ``no'' from a very young age, after all. For most of us, our first word was ``no'', and it quickly became our favorite word.  As toddlers and teenagers, we used ``no'' to
differentiate ourselves from our parents, peers, and surroundings. It's how we began to control what was happening around us, or at least, how we <i>tried</i> to control that. It helped us over those early developmental hurdles, and gave us our earliest sense of our personal boundaries -- and that's a lot of significance bound up in such a tiny word!

The problem isn't that ``no'' in and of itself is somehow bad; indeed, giving yourself permission to say "no" as an adult can keep you out of an awful lot of trouble.

The problem is that ``No'' begins to take on a life of its own. Too often, that life is yours.

Life is change, and ``no'' becomes a way of slowing down that change, or trying to stop it altogether. It is a shield we use to protect ourselves from having to experience anything new or different. Rather than riding the wave of change into a life full of exhilarating possibilities, we use ``no'' as a tether to keep us safely confined to the kiddie pool.

Using ``no'' to protect ourselves from change is like a kitten poking its head under covers, assuming it's completely hidden.  Change is going to happen, whether you say "no" to it or not. And, just like that kitten, assuming that "no" protects you from change is one sure way to have it pounce on you and bite your tail.

Let's be honest here: We usually say ``no'' out of fear, and some fears are entirely reasonable. It's sensible to say ``no'' to jumping off a bridge or ``no'' to cake if you are diabetic. These ``no's''  aren't the ones that keep us from living lives of incredible satisfaction and happiness.  It's those silly, neurotic fears like fearing rejection, or of looking stupid, or being wrong. It's the fear of commitment, the fear of speaking out, and the fear of facing our truest, deepest desires. The list is nauseatingly long, and we've all bought into some of these at least once.  These fears have shaped our lives, often to our detriment and sometimes to the detriment of those around us.

So the next time you're faced with something new and exciting and all those little neurotic fears start rioting inside you, what does it take to fight down a ``no'' and say ``yes'' instead?

In a word: Courage.

Like the Cowardly Lion (an archetype for the fear-ridden) we need to find our courage. Unlike him, we know that we have to face our fears, and find our courage within. Inside each of us beats a brave, fiercely courageous heart, willing to take on a challenge if it means that life afterward will be more authentic, happier, and freer. What better challenges to tackle than the fears that keep us chained to our tiny, boring, closeted little lives?

Do yourself a favor: Right now, identify and tackle at least one of those inner fears.  Find a reason to say "yes" today, and every day. You've only your inner coward to lose!

Se nos ha enseñado a decir `` no'' a partir de una edad muy joven, después de todo. Para la mayoría de nosotros, nuestra primera palabra fue `` no'', y rápidamente se convirtió en nuestra palabra favorita. Como los niños pequeños y adolescentes, utilizamos `` no'' a

En una palabra: Coraje.

Al igual que el León Cobarde (un arquetipo para el miedo-montado) tenemos que encontrar nuestro valor. A diferencia de él, sabemos que tenemos que enfrentar nuestros miedos y encontrar nuestro valor dentro. Dentro de cada uno de nosotros late un corazón valiente, feroz valiente, dispuesto a asumir un reto si esto significa que la vida después será más auténtica, más feliz y más libre. ¿Qué mejor para hacer frente a los retos de los miedos que nos mantienen encadenados a nuestros pequeños y aburridos, encerrados pequeñas vidas?

"I knew exactly what it was when I made eye contact with it," she said in an ABC interview. "It was either the mountain lion or me. One of us was going to die."

The cat attacked, catching Parker's head in its jaws. Parker fought the cat for six minutes before she was able to free her face and scream to alert her friends. They chased it off with rocks and a pocketknife, but not before Parker sustained severe injury to her right eye, along with deep gouges in her thigh.

After a surgery failed to repair her eye, doctors fitted her with a
prosthetic. While Parker suffered no life-threatening injuries, the trauma to her face was devastating; Parker said the most challenging aspect of the attack was dealing with the disfiguring injuries she suffered.

Her plastic surgeon played a huge role in helping her recover when he told her that he'd be able to repair the damage to her face.
"And that right there, I mean, it just changed my attitude; it changed the hope that I had. It changed everything," she told CNN. "And then, I knew not only was I alive, but I was going to progress."

Progress meant not only recovering from her injuries, but recovering from her emotional trauma. Part of Parker's solution has been to seek meaning in her experiences. Less than a year after the attack, she went back to Sequoia National Park to revisit the spot where she struggled for her life.  Now she's working to educate the public about what to do if a mountain lion attacks and, because she says that she would have stayed with her group had she seen warning signs posted, she's working to place them where mountain lions might be a danger to hikers.

According to Parker, her recovery, though difficult, gets better as each day passes. "I believe that my strength and hope has got me to where I am today."

In the holiday stage, which is the period just before and just after the move everything is new and exciting. One feels very energetic, enthusiastic and hopeful about everything in life. This is followed by the deterioration/ falling apart stage during which there may be great feelings of dissatisfaction. Things are difficult and one's excitement turns to distress. One goes through communication difficulties, impatience, anger, grief, and a feeling of inexperience. There is more hope during the adjustment stage. This is when you can see some direction, you are able to laugh at yourselves again and life begins to feel a bit more balanced. During the orientation stage there is an increasing feeling confidence and a sense of belonging. One starts to make connections within the new culture, and starts to enjoy many aspects of many of the customs and cultural conventions. It becomes easier to adopt these practices and make them part of your life and daily routine. Lastly, repatriation is when one returns to the "home country". A "reverse culture-shock" is often experienced. Re-adjusting to the old culture is as hard as, and may be even more difficult than the original move.

So in effect "culture shock' is a result of carrying out your everyday life in a way that you are not used to. Added to this is the fact that one is removed from familiar places and faces. It is quite natural then to undergo homesickness, stress, fear, and confusion. I have known people who did get on the first plane heading back home. But then there are many who stay. It is important to know that it is OK to experience all the feelings and frustrations one goes through, but also that there are ways to help you handle the challenges that you will face...

These tips may seem easy and oversimplified, but they work and before you know it you will be well on your road to recovery. You will be able to enjoy your new adventure and new aspects of your self-identity that you might not have had the opportunity to previously explore.

    * Don't expect yourself, others or situations to be perfect.
    * Have an open mind.
    * Be active and participate.
    * Speak to support groups and/or individuals.
    * Stay in touch with family and friends.

Your time abroad is definitely a unique and special time in your life. It is sure to be something you'll never forget. If you are aware of the stages that are bound to happen and follow the easy, but effective tips suggested, you'll be able to handle it successfully and have the time of your life.

En la etapa de vacaciones, que es el período justo antes y justo después de la mudanza todo es nuevo y emocionante. Uno se siente muy enérgico, entusiasta y esperanzado sobre todo en la vida. Esto es seguido por el deterioro / desmoronando etapa durante la cual puede haber grandes sentimientos de insatisfacción. Las cosas son difíciles y la propia emoción se convierte en angustia.
